NEVER PENNED
In the following, I sketched seven transitional vignettes without being neither certain nor resolved. Existing in the space between imaginative propositions and a call to action, this new album is an assembling of provocations, proposals and potential ways of thinking. NEVER PENNED bold and often bonkers sounds demand close listening but defy logic through glitching beats, sputtering rhythms, metallic textures and deep tribal grooves - they evoke the oscillation between work and draft, effort and accomplishment. Percussions in varying tempos and the use of electronic noise surges, a dub bass line, and background noises are all obliterated by numerous delays, starts, stops and re-starts to emphasise the unpredictable nature of these tracks.

SOTOPORTEGO
Featuring two lengthy pieces recorded over a month, ‘Sotoportego’ offers a few telescopic sections of walks and pauses under Venice’ Porticos, meshed into one another. Documented between S.Marc’s Square and Campo San Barnaba, the album presents various piano pieces that are usually played outside cafes in the summer alongside the voices of waiters, tourists, and improvised opera singers elated by the Venetian atmosphere, as well as mundane conversations that take place in the area. When one characteristic sequence encounters by chance a slight sound, this one colors that one.
On the other hand, when an event sequence encounters another one, they perturb each other, for their good or for their evil. Such is life. ‘Sotoportego’ is based on principles of random variations that create encounters and superimpositions of cycles that combine themselves by natural succession. It is an example of my fascination with observing daily life and finding poetry in the everyday in an unaltered and vivid documentation of Venetian aliveness.

DEQUIUDES
Dequiudes is the second instalment inspired by Bergman's movie The Silence. This new piece centres on miscommunication on multiple levels and deals with the difficulty of creating meaning or perhaps finding or determining meanings through language. The previous piece, Tystnaden, obliterated all the dialogues in the movie, exploring the void and empty spaces of human communication. In contrast, Dequiudes offers more freedom of invention by delving into the idea of arbitrary vocalization. The text, following Bergman's constructed language adopted in the movie, is created by repeating the words phonetically, thereby adding a further layer of possible misinterpretation. The conversations become deformed and exposed to many formal rules, originating a shifting dialogue that has the confused and illogical appearance of life. With the gaining of expressive language/sounds as a support, we are left to grapple with the mystery that is reality. What remains to us, in the end, is only our own voice.

Tystnaden
Tystnaden is a sound piece which takes the movie The Silence by Ingmar Bergman as its starting point. The film centres on a miscommunication on multiple levels and deals with the difficulty of creating meanings or perhaps finding or determining meanings. In the mind of Bergman, God is silent as his previous film established, because there is no god in reality.
Tystnaden obliterates all the dialogues in the movie leaving only the fluctuating and unrecognisable noises and the human murmurs, sighs, snivels, loud chewing, shouts and hard swallowing, suggesting a regression to a state of arbitrary vocalisation. These sounds offer us little freedom of invention, yet they became deformed and exposed to many formal rules originating a shifting dialogue that has the confused and illogic appearance of life. With the loss of expressive language (a support), we are left to make do with the mystery that is reality. What remains to us, in the end, is only our own voice.
Caught between hopes and doubts Tystnaden carefully balances questions and paradoxes such as: If metaphysical questions are hopeless why do we keep asking them? Is God a clue to the travel and travails of truth rather than the truth of assertion?

Inspired by the Italian artist Alessandro Greggio ‘Elia’ (1968-2005), this new collaboration between myself and saxophonist Tom Scott is intended to be a nod to Elia's spontaneous and witty attitude to life, as well as a mark of respect to the vibrant and profound side of his artistic oeuvre.
In particular, the album is influenced by an anecdote told to me by Elia who not having prepared anything for his final degree art show, showed-up in front of the examiners with a small wooden gate that he had found in a hallway nearby - or so the story goes. He recounted that he left the gate untouched and presented it as his final work in the form of a story.
From this perspective, I composed the arrangement for the music by connecting the letters E, L, I, A on some of the short stories written by him in the 90s. The resulting graphic drawings were over - imposed onto a score, which was consequently interpreted by Tom Scott in one take, without having previously read it.
The result is a combination of unforeseen shifts, unpredicted repetitions and surprising longer meditative segments. The tracks presented in this album are the undefiled result of a single studio session that can be described as a way of mapping and intertwining the emotional flows of Elia’ way of being, his constant instinctual gesture and chance approach attitude to make work.
